WV Geriatric Education Center: Health Literacy

According to research from the U. S. Department of Education, only 12 percent of English speaking adults in the United States have proficient health literacy skills. The overwhelming majority of adults have difficulty understanding and using everyday health information that comes from many sources, including the media, web sites, nutrition and medicine labels as well as from health professionals.The WVGEC and the CAMC Health Education and Research Institute jointly sponsor the annual Interdisciplinary Health Professionals Health Literacy Training Program. The target audience for this training program includes physicians, dentists, nurses, pharmacists, social workers, allied health professionals, and direct care workers who care for and interact with older adults about their health. Medicare SHIP: FREE assistance with Medicare 

What is SHIP?SHIP is a free health benefits counseling service for Medicare beneficiaries and their families or caregivers. SHIPs mission is to educate, advocate, counsel and empower people to make informed healthcare benefit decisions. SHIP is an independent program funded by Federal agencies and is not affiliated with the insurance industry.

State Health Insurance Assistance Programs (SHIPs) provide free help to Medicare beneficiaries who have questions or issues with their health insurance. You can call a counselor or attend a workshop/presentation in your area
A Few Reminders …
Some states call their SHIP programs by a different name so we have added a topic called “Program Name.”

Many of the State SHIP websites have calendars listings workshops or ‘Medicare Monday’ events.

SHIP Counseling is free of charge.

If you are calling from out-of-state to a different State note that many of the State’s ‘Toll Free’ numbers are for in-state-use only.

If you are eligible for Medicare, you are eligible for SHIP Counseling.

Medicare health and drug plans can change each year in regard to cost, coverage and what providers and pharmacies are in their networks. October 15th to December 7th is when all people with Medicare can change their Medicare health plans and prescription drug coverage for the following year to better meet their needs.

About: The California Department of Aging’s Health Insurance Counseling and Advocacy Program (HICAP) provides personalized counseling, community education and outreach events for Medicare beneficiaries. WVU dental faculty experts offer a complete range of services, from general dentistry to advanced specialty care. Visit times and fees are comparable to a private dental office.

Graduate dentists are practitioners who are seeking advanced education as general dentists, or who are becoming specialists. Treatment in these clinics is supervised by WVU faculty dentists. Fees generally average 20 to 25 percent less than a private dental office.

Dental Services at the WVU School of Dentistry
General dental services are available in the WVU School of Dentistry student clinics. Treatment is closely supervised by experienced WVU faculty. Although visit times are generally longer than you would experience in private dental offices, fees are generally 40 to 50 percent less than a private dental office.

Adult Dental ServicesThe primary goal of WV Health Right’s dental clinic is the elimination of pain and infection. Patients suffering from dental pain and infection can receive antibiotics on a walk-in basis Monday – Friday from 8:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. Once a patient has been seen for x-rays and an exam by a dentist has been performed, an appointment will be scheduled for you to start necessary dental treatment. It is usually your third visit before treatment begins. WV Health Right has over 100 dedicated dentists, oral surgeons, hygienists, and assistants who volunteer their time to the dental clinic.
